Who knows more about washing machines than the technician who maintains them? We talked to Andrey, a repairman for washing machines from the YouDo.com service – tried to understand what we are doing wrong when we select and operate these machines. Below is his personal opinion on the main issues.
It is very difficult to say which machines are more reliable. I can tell which ones have to be repaired more often, but I do not know the sales volumes, so it will not be possible to determine the percentage of those requiring repairs. If it’s all about subjective preferences, I can note, for example, Electrolux, Bosch, Gorenje… But keep in mind: each brand has better models and less successful ones. That is, no one will ever give you unequivocal recommendations.
What can I advise: go to the store, look and touch the cars. It is possible to draw some conclusions about the quality by indirect indications. Cheap and thin plastic, poorly pressed control buttons, uneven gaps at the joints of parts – such moments should alert. If the flaws are visible even with the naked eye, there is a desire to save money, and this can affect the reliability of the equipment itself.
About 50% of all breakdowns occur due to the fault of the user, not the manufacturer. These are banal blockages, foreign objects entering the drain line. From what I have pulled out over the years of work, it would be possible to put together a good collection. There is usually only one way: this is the connection of the drum and the cuff of the hatch. Small items of clothing (socks and others) and the contents of your pockets “seep” there, if you have not checked them before washing. And, for example, ruble coin perfectly clogs the drain hose in some models.
Another significant proportion of breakdowns is failure of heating elements due to the build-up of scale. Tap water, even in large cities, has a lot of impurities, which are deposited on the heating elements. In theory, softening additives of washing powders should fight them, but I have no data on their effectiveness. Usually, heating elements live longer in families where they do not save on powders. And here it is difficult to say which washing machine is better or more reliable.
What can I advise: check pockets and wash small items in bags. Do not use the cheapest detergents, and in any case, buy detergents in safe places, such as chain stores. This is less likely to run into a fake. For descaling, use specialized products (not folk): pour them into an empty tank once a quarter and run an idle cycle…
About the cost of repair
In authorized services, the cost of repairs is always higher than that of call technicians. Because a foreman is usually a self-employed or individual entrepreneur, and a service is most often a large company with high management costs.
About spare parts
Again, almost all manufacturers think about ease of assembly, not repair. For example, in washing machines Bosch, Electrolux, Ariston and some others, instead of collapsible tanks, welded (non-collapsible) tanks are now installed. As a result, if earlier, when replacing bearings, spare parts cost 1000 rubles, with such design solutions, 5000 rubles will have to be paid for them. – parts are changed only in the assembly. Korean Lg and a few more companies are still producing collapsible tanks, but I think this is not for long.
In most cases, I offer my customers non-original spare parts. The difference in price can be two times, while the quality is almost the same. But manufacturers, of course, resist this too. For example, Miele loves to use unique components of our own design. BUT Bosch quite often in a new model it fundamentally sets up details with any difference from the original in the previous model. Such features significantly complicate the search for spare parts for private specialists: some have to be ordered. The simpler the car, the simpler the design is usually – most likely, I will fix it on the first visit (it’s not for nothing that I carry an assortment of popular spare parts in the trunk).
TOTAL: a few important rules
- Study your washing machine model carefully before buying, “feel” it with your hands.
- Check your pockets thoroughly clothes before washing – not only in order not to accidentally wash the passport, but also to avoid clogging the drain with small items.
- Don’t use cheap laundry detergent… The more expensive it is, the more chances it has a quality anti-scale additive package.
- Use once a quarter special descaler…
- When deciding on a repair, check the cost of a new washing machine of the same class. If the repair costs 70 or more percent of the cost, it makes no sense…
