It contains over 15 billion transistors
Microsoft at HotChips 2020 has decided to reveal more details about the hybrid processor that powers the Xbox Series X.
We knew the main parameters earlier: the APU was created by AMD, it is produced according to the 7 nm process technology, contains eight processor cores with Zen 2 architecture and a GPU with 52 CUs (56 in total, but four are disabled) containing 3328 stream processors, created on RDNA2 architecture.
Now we know that the APU is made up of 15.3 billion transistors. This is probably the largest consumer hybrid x86-compatible processor if we are talking about the number of transistors. The crystal area is 360.4 mm 2. For comparison, the APU of the Xbox One X console has an area of 367 mm 2 with 6.6 billion transistors. According to some third-party calculations, the GPU occupies almost half (47.5%) of the entire APU die area.
The GPU block diagram confirms the presence of dedicated blocks to speed up ray tracing, and these blocks can also work with textures.
Microsoft also mentions accelerating machine learning, but does not talk about dedicated cores for these tasks. Recall that GeForce RTX video cards have tensor cores for such tasks.
