The Hinterkaifeck murders stand as one of Germany’s most haunting and mysterious unsolved crimes. Taking place in 1922, this case has fascinated true crime enthusiasts for decades. Below, we explore key aspects of the tragedy that continue to intrigue investigators and historians alike.

The Murders and Victims

On March 31, 1922, six members of the Gruber household were gruesomely killed on their remote farm in Hinterkaifeck, Bavaria. The victims included Andreas Gruber, his wife Cäzilia, their widowed daughter Viktoria Gabriel, her two young children, and the newly hired maid, Maria Baumgartner.

All were bludgeoned with a mattock, a farm tool similar to a pickaxe. The crime scene revealed unsettling details: some bodies were hidden under the hay, and it appeared the murderer remained in the house for several days after the crime, feeding the livestock and using household supplies.

Strange Events Before the Murders

In the weeks leading up to the killings, the Gruber family experienced a series of eerie incidents. They heard unexplained noises in their attic, leading to the resignation of their previous maid, who feared the property was haunted. Strange footprints were also found leading from the forest to the farm but not back, suggesting an intruder was watching the family. These incidents, combined with claims of missing items and doors opening on their own, add to the chilling mystery of the case.

The Investigation and Lingering Mystery

Despite decades of investigation, no suspect has ever been convicted. Early theories ranged from vagrants to personal vendettas, but none could be proven, as nothing of significant value was stolen.

A renewed inquiry in 2007 by the Fürstenfeldbruck Police Academy used modern methods to re-examine the evidence but still failed to identify the killer. The lack of surviving forensic material and the remote location of the farm have left the case shrouded in mystery.
