On April 12, the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology released an analytical report on the domestic mobile phone market’s performance in March 2021.
Data show that from January to March, the domestic mobile phone market’s total shipments amounted to 97.973 million units, an increase of 100.1% over the same period last year. Now the Chinese smartphone market has returned to the level of 2019, before the outbreak of the pandemic.
In March alone, total domestic mobile phone sales totalled 36.09 million units, increasing 65.9% over the same period last year. In March this year, shipments of 5G-enabled mobile phones totalled 27.498 million units, accounting for 76.2% of the total.
In 2020, mobile phones’ total domestic sales were 308 million units, down 20.8% from a year earlier. Of these, 163 million were 5G smartphones, accounting for 52.9%.
In August 2019, 5G mobile phone shipments were less than 1% and soared sharply in the next 10 months. Since June last year, 5G-enabled mobile phones have accounted for over 60% of total shipments. Today it is over 75%.
