We’ve already seen flexible and rolling displays in mobile devices. What’s the next step? Specialists of the research center Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology showed a development based on a stretchable display with a high elongation rate.
In this case, a stretchable OLED display and a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor were combined to create a simple device for measuring heart rate and displaying the corresponding indicator. We can say that it turned out to be such a smart patch with a pulse sensor.
In this case, as you can see in the photo, there is also a separate unit with electronics. The display itself is capable of stretching by 30%, while maintaining performance. Tests with the device attached to the inside of the wrist have shown that hand movements do not cause any impairment in device performance. Stretching the screen with the sensor 1000 times in a row also passed without consequences.
At the moment this is just research, but their goal is to create a commercial product. Unfortunately, scientists do not yet say how long it will take.
