Samsung Electronics today announced the industry’s most powerful SAS 24G (SAS-4) solid state drive. The novelty received the designation PM1653. According to the manufacturer, the use of the SAS-4 interface allows it to maintain twice the speed compared to SAS-3. The PM1653 is also the industry’s first SAS-4 SSD based on 6th Generation V-NAND (over 100 layers). Through the use of these microcircuits, it is possible to manufacture SSDs with capacities from 800 GB to 30.72 TB.

Building the SAS 24G ecosystem requires not only drives, but also the appropriate host bus adapters (HBAs). On this issue, Samsung is working closely with Broadcom, a leading HBA vendor, to ensure a smooth and timely transition to the next generation of SAS.

The PM1653 is optimized for high-performance enterprise servers. It delivers the industry’s highest random access read performance – up to 800K IOPS. The sequential read speed can reach 4300MB / s, which is the maximum available speed for the SAS 24G interface. For increased reliability, the drive is equipped with two SAS ports. It is compatible with the SAS-3 platform.

Samsung has already started shipping preview samples of the PM1653. Mass production is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.
