Today, HP has several lines of notebooks in the range. The most popular is the Pavilion, an affordable model for basic tasks. The ENVY series is considered premium: here both the filling is more powerful and the materials are nicer. Our ENVY 15-ep0039ur at the time of publication costs about 140,000 rubles, in general, not cheap. How well does the laptop “work off” the money invested in it?

Screen and body

ENVY 15 received an aluminum alloy casing, which is in the order of things for devices of this level. Looks classy, although the corners are unexpectedly sharp. No extra elements – just the HP logo on the lid. The surface has a matte finish so that it does not leave fingerprints.

On the lower part there are traditionally deflectors and rubber feet. More precisely, only a pair located closer to the user can be called legs. Closer to the back, there is a rib rather than a leg on the panel.

From a design point of view, it does not look very attractive, but in practice it works very effectively. For example, even while lying on your lap, the laptop still remains raised, while the classic legs in such cases hang helplessly at the sides.

There is no hatch on the rear panel; to install a drive or RAM (we will talk about these possibilities a little below), you need to remove the entire panel.

The screen is, as expected, made on an IPS-matrix, and it is beautiful. The frames are thin, the colors are natural, and the brightness of 400 nits allows you to work without problems even in direct sunlight. By the way, the coverage of the sRGB space is 100%, which is also important for those who are connected with photo / video. FHD resolution is also typical even for premium series.

A camera is hidden in the upper frame, it does not have a mechanical shutter, but you can use the shutdown button. The LED on the button indicates whether the camera is currently disabled.

There is no shortage of connectors. Most of it is located on the left side: this is USB-A, a pair of USB-C and HDMI. Slightly below there is even a port for a microSD card – recently they have begun to disappear from laptops more and more often.

On the right side there is another USB-A and a 3.5 mm jack (obviously, for connecting a mouse and headphones).

The keyboard of the laptop is generally comfortable: the key travel is small, the keystrokes are clear. Special thanks for the competent layout of the right side: the arrow keys do not have any additional functions, and PgUp, PgDn, End and Home are placed in a separate column. If we are to find fault, it is a little frustrating that the 15.6-inch laptop does not have a place for a numpad on the panel, although there is one even in the similar-sized Pavilion.

What really gets in the way is the light-colored keys. If, when working indoors, the backlight somehow highlights the symbols on them, then in the open area, even in not the most sunny weather, the symbols are lost. Of course, the silver color of the keys matches the body color perfectly, but design decisions often go to the detriment of usability.

The power button in the top row next to BackSpace also caused some concerns. But by accidentally pressing it, the laptop does not turn off – only if you press and hold it.

Modern ENVY 15s are equipped with 10th generation Intel processors. In the simplest version it is Intel Core i5 10300H, in our modification ENVY 15-ep0039ur costs i7 10750H. It is a 6-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz with overclocking capability up to 5 GHz. What is important, unlike modern ultrabooks, in ENVY15 there was a place for a discrete video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. This makes the laptop virtually universal. It is suitable for games: for example, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey can be run at high settings, while getting an FPS of at least 50. It is quite comfortable to edit videos or retouch photos on it.

As for the more commonplace tasks, the hardware will cope without any problems. All ENVY 15 models have at least 16 GB of RAM (our version is exactly that amount). As for the drives, there is already a terabyte PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, which leaves an empty M.2 slot on the board. The RAM is presented in the form of two 8 GB strips, it can also be expanded by replacing the strips with 16 GB ones, if there really is such a need. It’s always nice when the manufacturer leaves room for an upgrade.

The laptop is perfect for work. In the sense that its battery lasts a little over 8 hours in the mode of operation with office programs and browsers. If you see that the battery is running out, then it’s time to wrap up. All jokes, but the autonomy is really good. The manufacturer promises up to 13 hours without recharging, but for this you will have to reduce the brightness of the screen and not run resource-intensive programs.

It’s a pity, of course, that the proprietary connector is still used for charging, and not USB-C with PD. The standard adapter produces 200 W, while it weighs a lot: its presence in a backpack is perfectly felt. Theoretically, you can still charge a laptop via USB, but it’s not a fact that a 65-watt device is enough for full work and recharging.

Total: our impressions of the HP ENVY 15-ep0039ur

When you buy a laptop for 20,000 rubles, you are ready to compromise. When the price tag is above 130,000, one would like to hope that it will be as close to ideal as possible. The ENVY 15-ep0039ur looks like a completely versatile laptop, ready for any task. Perhaps it will be heavy for those who often carry a laptop with them, but he can do not only work in office programs and browsers, but also graphics of average complexity in games and other software due to a discrete video card. At the same time, an excellent screen removes all restrictions: it will perfectly suit specialists in photo and video, moreover, it is bright enough for any conditions. With a 10th Gen Intel processor on board and expandability for both RAM and permanent memory, the laptop is not in danger of becoming obsolete.

Of the minuses – the same weight, the keyboard is slightly blind in good lighting and the lack of a digital block on it. Perhaps we are paying too much attention to these aspects as we work with texts. In any case, the problems are not so catastrophic – after 2 weeks of active use, I never wanted to pick up the old laptop.

Of course, for basic tasks it is not at all necessary to buy such a productive laptop – you can take something simpler (see our recommendations). And if you’re looking for a laptop to study, we have some great tips too.
