Qualcomm today announced its new flagship processor for mobile devices, which has received a very unexpected name – Snapdragon 888. According to the manufacturer, this platform opens a new mobile device era and provides a new high-class user experience.
The Snapdragon 888 single-chip platform has a built-in third-generation 5G modem Snapdragon X60. It can provide smartphones with support for both millimeter-wave (mmWave) and sub-6 GHz (Sub-6) 5G networks in all major frequency bands around the world. Autonomous and non-autonomous networks are supported. In general, smartphones based on this chipset should be compatible with almost any 5G network anywhere in the world.
Qualcomm also notes the presence in the Snapdragon 888 of the new sixth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine with a completely redesigned Qualcomm Hexagon coprocessor. This provides a significant jump in performance compared to the flagship of the previous generation Snapdragon 865. The latter could offer up to 15 TOPS (trillion operations per second), while for the new product, it is announced up to 26 TOPS.
The Adreno GPU has also been significantly improved. Specific figures have not been specified, but the manufacturer claims that the Snapdragon 888 can deliver frame rates up to 144 FPS, just like in “gaming computers.” Support for Snapdragon Elite Gaming is also noted, which means updating drivers and support for various technologies designed to improve the gaming experience.
Finally, the manufacturer notes that the Snapdragon 888 “turns smartphones into professional cameras.” The built-in Qualcomm Spectra signal processor can process up to 2.7 gigapixels per second, or about 120 12MP photos, in just one second. This is 35% faster than its predecessor.
Unfortunately, Qualcomm did not disclose absolutely all the specifications during today’s announcement. In particular, the configuration of processor cores is still a mystery and the timing of the release of smartphones on the new chip. Although, regarding the latter, it can be said with almost complete certainty that the first smartphones on Snapdragon 888 will be presented in January. Although, maybe someone will be in time this year.
