An event with 70 years of history can be a thing of the past.
The international exhibition center Koelnmesse, located in Cologne (Germany), published a message regarding the exhibition of photographic equipment Photokina. The report says that due to the ongoing sharp decline in the photo equipment market, it was temporarily stopped organizing this exhibition.
“Unfortunately, current industry conditions do not provide a viable basis for a leading international photography and video exhibition,” explained Gerald Böse, President and CEO of Koelnmesse. – This sharp decline after 70 years of collective history was very difficult. It is very painful for us to observe this trend in the industry, with which we have always maintained a close and trusting partnership. But we greeted the situation with a clear, honest decision not to proceed with this event; a solution to which, unfortunately, we have no alternative ”.
Even before the coronavirus pandemic began, the market was severely shocked, with double-digit sales declines annually. In 2020, the momentum in this direction has increased significantly. This could not but affect the fate of the exhibition, which has been held in Cologne regularly since 1950, and has remained the leading industry event for many generations. Whether the exhibition will be resumed, one day is unclear.
