Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi and chairman and CEO of Xiaomi Group, gave an interview in which he revealed when his company will be able to lead the smartphone market in China.
According to the latest data from analyst firm Canalys, Xiaomi became the second largest mobile phone brand in the world in the second quarter of this year, with only 2% behind Samsung. At the same time, Xiaomi barely made it to the top five leaders of the Chinese smartphone market, losing even to Huawei.
Lei Jun said that today, no more than 30% of people buy mobile phones on the Internet, and 70% buy them in retail stores. That is why, back in 2016, Xiaomi began to actively open offline stores. Back in April, the company was preparing to open its 5,000th store, and now the company is opening 1,000 stores every month. The 8000th store was recently opened.
Currently, there is a Xiaomi store in every district in the country and they continue to open. I feel that when our offline stores completely cover the whole country, we have a chance to take the first place in the Chinese market.
He also added that there are plans to open at least 10,000 shops in the villages.
