We have collected the most popular methods for cleaning the iron, most of which do not even require the purchase of special products. All the necessary materials are available in almost any home.

Removal of carbon deposits from ceramic coatings and metal

Everyone who is engaged in ironing periodically has to face the need to remove carbon deposits. Moreover, the likelihood of occurrence does not depend on the quality and price of the iron itself, but is more related to compliance with the rules of its operation.

To restore the normal appearance of the surface, it is worth using methods that correspond to its material. And the easiest way, as practice shows, is to clean irons with a ceramic coating or metal sole.

Table vinegar

One of the most common carbon cleaners is regular table vinegar or acetic acid. It can be applied in three ways:

  1. Vinegar is mixed with ammonia in a 1: 1 ratio. The sole is wiped with a cloth soaked in the resulting mixture.
  2. Add 2 tbsp to 1 glass of water. l. vinegar. The heated surface is wiped with a cloth or cotton wool soaked in this solution.
  3. The cloth is soaked in vinegar, an iron is placed on it and left overnight. In the morning, the sole is washed first with soapy water and then with plain water and wiped off with a dry cloth.

When using vinegar, it is worth considering the unpleasant odor it produces. Therefore, cleaning the iron, especially when using the third method, should be done in a room with good ventilation.

Laundry soap

A bar of laundry soap will only remove fresh carbon deposits. Removing long-frozen dirt with it will be ineffective. The method consists in performing the following actions:

  1. A small amount of crushed soap dissolves in warm water (1 tbsp is enough).
  2. The surface of the sole is wiped with a cloth soaked in water and wiped dry.
  3. Dissolved soap is applied to the slightly heated sole and left for 15–20 minutes.

When the surface has cooled and the mixture has hardened, wash off the laundry soap with a damp sponge. Most of the carbon deposits will be removed along with the dried, soapy crust.


Using common salt for cleaning is not the most effective, but cheap and affordable way for everyone. The product can be sprinkled on cardboard or foil and spread evenly. Then, the heated soleplate of the iron should be walked over the salt layer until carbon deposits are completely removed.

The second option of application involves wrapping salt (2-3 tbsp. L is enough) in a cotton cloth. The package is used to rub the heated sole. Unlike the first method, this one is suitable not only for metal and ceramics, but also for Teflon coating.

Paraffin candle

The process of cleaning the sole with a regular candle is quite simple:

  1. The candle is wrapped in cotton cloth to make it easier to hold.
  2. The sole heated to the maximum temperature is wiped with the tip of a candle.
  3. After the surface of the iron has cooled down, the paraffin is carefully removed and the sole is wiped off.

When applying the technique, hold the iron over a tray or newspaper because the melted paraffin wax will flow down. You should also be careful if the surface of the household appliance is embossed and covered with steam holes. To prevent the paraffin from staining things, it will have to be carefully removed from all the recesses.

Hydrogen peroxide

A piece of cloth or cotton wool is moistened in a 3% peroxide solution, after which it is used to wipe all dark spots on the sole of the iron. The surface must be cold. The likelihood of carbon removal is high, even if it is not too fresh.

Peroxide can be used with ammonia. This will increase the efficiency of cleaning and does not require serious costs. Differences from the first method – rubbing the sole in turn, first with hydrogen peroxide, and then with 5 drops of ammonia dissolved in 100 ml of water.


Another easy way is to use regular toothpaste, regardless of the type. Due to the presence of a small amount of abrasive substances in this tool, it can be used for cleaning ceramic and metal surfaces, but is not recommended for Teflon.

The paste is applied in several stages. First, it is applied to a slightly warmed surface. Then, using a soft cloth or brush, rub the sole with a paste until the dirt is completely removed. The remains of the product are removed with a damp cloth.

Cleansing pencil

A method that still requires the purchase of special products – a pencil for cleaning the soles. However, the cost is small. And there is a good selection of different options on the market. Use the pencil only in a well-ventilated area.

The method involves heating the sole to a certain temperature, which is indicated in the instructions for the cleaning agent. Then the contaminated areas are rubbed with a pencil. It is advisable to make circular movements and not put too much pressure on the bar. After application, the substance is removed with a clean and dry cotton cloth.

Acetone or other solvent

Acetone will help to get rid of not only carbon deposits, but also pieces of cellophane or polyethylene adhering to the surface of the sole. If it was not on the farm, you can use any type of nail polish remover. Including the one in which there is “no acetone”.

The technique is as simple as most of the previous ones. A cotton swab or natural cloth is moistened in a solvent and then used to wipe off the dirt. After removing the carbon deposits, the residues of the product are washed off with warm water.

How to get rid of carbon deposits on a Teflon iron

Teflon-coated iron soles are highly resistant to deposits and dirt. But if the surface does get dirty, it will be more difficult to remove it without the risk of scratches. Therefore, only products that do not contain abrasives are suitable for cleaning.

The main ways to remove carbon deposits from the soles:

  • Using a cleaning stick, which is first applied to the heated surface and then removed.
  • Impregnation of carbon deposits on a heated surface with 70% acetic acid solution and carefully removing it.
  • Leave the iron on a vinegar-soaked cloth overnight.

To clean Teflon, you can also use products specifically designed for such surfaces. Sometimes they come with the iron, but more often they are simply mentioned in the instructions.

Prevention of carbon deposits

Knowing several ways to remove carbon deposits will help you quickly get rid of dirt on the soleplate. However, it is even better to prevent their occurrence. To do this, it is worth following the following recommendations:

  • A different ironing temperature should be set for each fabric. For example, for cotton clothes it is 175 ° C, for linen – 220 ° C, for silk – 120 ° C.
  • When ironing woolen and synthetic items, use damp gauze.
  • It is advisable to iron only clean clothes. When ironing dirty things, there is a possibility of dust sticking to the sole, which turns into carbon deposits when heated.
  • It is advisable to clean the sole after each ironing using a clean cloth or napkin.

Following these tips will allow you to spend much less time cleaning the sole of the iron from carbon deposits. But, more importantly, it will help to avoid pollution and damage to things that are far from always able to be restored.
