Camera with APS-C: New medium format and three lenses

Hello Fujiboi and Fujigirls! I am addressing you as one of you. Here the novelties arrived, so again there is reason to think about buying another camera or lenses.

Fujifilm X-E4

New camera with an APS-C type sensor, like the rest of the X line. It uses the same 26.1 megapixel X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor with back illumination as in the latest X100V, X-T4 and X-S10. It is paired with the same X-Processor 4 that the listed cameras received. And, it would seem, Fujifilm, why produce identical cameras?

But it is not so. Each one is different. The X-T4 is great for video and studio work with direct uploads of photos to Lightroom or Capture One. The X-S10 will suit those users who took pictures with DSLRs, but decided to switch to Fuji – the interface will be clear and pleasant.

The X-E4 has a slightly different concept. Earlier, I talked about the experience of using Fujifilm X100V:

So the X-E4 is very similar to it with several important differences:

  • The flip-up display can be tilted vertically for selfies, which was not possible with the X100V;
  • The X-E4 has the ability to swap lenses.

Other differences include the transferred buttons, a flat body, because of which the camera will most likely not hold very well in the hand, a less serious flash (does anyone use built-in solutions at all?). And the biggest loss: there is no ISO adjustment knob. Why it was removed is unclear.

What does Fujifilm promise?

  • Very fast autofocus: only 0.02 seconds;
  • Lightness: the carcass weighs only 364 grams;
  • Magnesium top frame;
  • 18 film simulation modes – what many people love Fujifilm cameras for;
  • Video recording at 4K 30 fps at 4: 2: 2 bitrate on a video recorder via HDMI.

The latter is generally a controversial function on a particular device. As in the case of the X100V, the video recording here exists, most likely, in order to simply be – there is no matrix stabilization here, and whether the optics stub will help is not very clear. Plus, you still need to study how autofocus works while shooting a video. If there are no questions to X-T4 at all, then I have certain doubts.

In short: this camera looks exactly like a camera, which can be used to shoot video if necessary. But it is best to do it statically and be prepared that it is unlikely to be involved in serious production. But I’ll be glad to be wrong.

The camera will go on sale in Russia in March. The prices are as follows:

  • Only the “body” of Fujifilm X-E4 will cost 76,999 rubles;
  • Kit Fujifilm X-E4 ACC, which includes a thumb rest and an additional grip, will cost 81,999 rubles;
  • Fujifilm X-E4 Kit 27mmF2.8 WR R will cost Russian buyers 89,999 rubles.

The last set is, in my opinion, the most interesting. And now I will tell you why.

Fujinon XF27mmF2.8 R WR

In general, I wanted to first tell you about the second camera, but decided to break the logic. Fujinon XF27mmF2.8 R WR is lens for Fuji cameras in APS-C format. And he seems to be cool.

I now have a similar one: also 27 mm, also a “pancake”, also Fujinon (except perhaps Chinese and plastic, and the XF27mmF2.8 R WR is Japanese and waterproof). And I like the pictures that are taken with him. True, I still want myself 23mm f / 2 or even f / 1.4 – I really liked the angle of the X100V.

What you need to know about the Fujinon XF27mmF2.8 R WR?

Few things:

  • It is waterproof;
  • Fujifilm claims to be able to operate at -10 ° C;
  • It is very light: 84 grams is the lightest XF lens;
  • There is a hood for the iris level control;
  • The optical system consists of five groups containing seven lenses;
  • This is the equivalent of 41mm;
  • Precise autofocusing is assured by a powerful DC motor.

The lens will go on sale in March. The price in Russia will be 35,999 rubles, that is, it is very profitable to buy it bundled with Fujifilm X-E4.

Fujinon XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR

One more lens… This time a telephoto lens with an optical zoom factor of 4.28 ×.

What do you need to know about this lens?

  • This is the equivalent of 107–457 mm;
  • The optical stub has 5.5 stops;
  • Linear motor provides fast autofocus;
  • The lens consists of 17 lenses in 12 groups;
  • Relatively light and compact: 132.5 mm long with a diameter of 75 mm, and weighs about 580 grams;
  • When using the XF2X TC WR tele-converter, the focal length increases to 140–600 mm, which is the equivalent of 213–914 mm.

The lens will go on sale in Europe in March 2021. Price – 65,999 rubles. The Russian price has not been announced.

Fujifilm GFX100S

Fourth chamber medium format in the modern GFX line. And this is one of the lightest and most compact cameras of this format: its “body” weighs only 900 grams! This is a decent figure for a camera whose sensor is about 1.7 times larger than full-frame sensors.

The camera is already quite big. Yes, and it is compact only relatively – I photographed with an expensive and high-quality Fujifilm GFX100. “Esca” is really smaller and lighter: 156.2 × 163.6 × 102.9 mm with a weight of 1400 grams for a regular “hundred” and 150 × 104.2 × 87.2 mm with a weight of 900 grams for “Esca”. This is a significant advance considering how much GFX lenses weigh.

Despite the size, it uses the same 102 megapixel matrix as in the older model, and the same lenses. The body is made of magnesium alloy and is dust and splash resistant. The camera can be used at -10 ° C.

Combat here and autofocus. The GFX100S uses both phase and contrast. At the same time, Fujifilm promises that in automatic mode the camera will focus in 0.16 seconds. And this figure will hold even in low light conditions down to -5.5 EV! Plus, there is also phase detection autofocus sensors located throughout the frame.

The main innovation in comparison with the heavy and large version of the Fujifilm GFX100 is the presence of matrix stabilization in five axes with six stops.

However, somehow you have to come to terms with the main drawback of this camera: one slot for a memory card. Why the company decided not to give the opportunity to create a backup of images is not clear.

The camera can shoot 16-bit RAW, fitting them into a file of its own .RAF format. If you wish, you can shoot video on it: maximum quality – 4K 29.97 fps with a bitrate of 400 Mbps. It can record in 10-bit F-Log or 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW via HDMI. That is, the medium format Fujifilm GFX100S shoots out of the box in Apple ProRes RAW! This is interesting.

Sony revealed its new fullframe α1 yesterday. In Russia, this camera will cost about 700 thousand rubles.

The medium format is a matrix that is larger than that of full frames. At the same time, Fujifilm GFX100S will cost less than α1: $ 5999 in the USA before taxes, and in Russia – 499,999 rubles. I’m not saying that you don’t need to buy Sony – the α1 is more of a video camera, and the GFX100S is more about photography. But the price ratio looks very interesting in my opinion.

The camera will go on sale in March 2021.

Fujinon GF80mmF1.7 R WR

And last lens… It will fit all Fujifilm GFX medium format cameras. And since the medium format is larger than the full format, then the crop factor will be less than one. That is, the equivalent focal length of this lens is 63 mm.

The optical system of the GF80mmF1.7 R WR consists of 12 lenses arranged in nine groups, including one aspherical lens and two Super ED lenses.

Remember when I said above about the size and weight of lenses for medium format cameras? So the length of this lens is only 99.2 mm, and the weight is only 795 grams. Well, that is, it is a compact and lightweight lens for such cameras. Like all of today’s new products, this lens is protected from dust and moisture, and is also capable of operating at temperatures of -10 ° C.

The lens will go on sale in March 2021. The price in Russia is 199,999 rubles.
