Samsung Electronics decided to approach the fulfillment of the requirements of Russian legislation on a grand scale – Yandex applications are installed on the smartphones sold, which cannot be removed.
As a reminder, from April 1, a law comes into force obliging to install certain Russian-developed applications on smartphones and other devices. Moreover, the State Duma website explains that the law applies to smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, laptops and personal computers manufactured after April 1, 2021.
Nevertheless, Samsung began to distribute Yandex services to devices in the hands of users, sold long before April 1. Users of various series, from inexpensive Galaxy A smartphones to the very expensive flagship Galaxy Note20 Ultra, have begun to report receiving a system update with the April Android security update.
The problem is that the firmware also automatically installs Yandex.Browser, Yandex.Disk and Yandex.Maps on devices, and users complain that they cannot be removed. In the description of the update, Samsung refers to the requirements of Russian legislation.
According to Kommersant, according to experts, the update is due to the commercial agreements of the companies, and not new rules, and the precedent should attract the attention of the Federal Antimonopoly Service, where they believe that applications should be removed at the request of the user.
Samsung admitted that the new law does not apply to already sold devices, but notes:
Nevertheless, taking into account the technical features, the system software is updated for the entire model range. ”
The list of mandatory for smartphones and tablets includes 16 applications: Yandex.Browser, Yandex search engine, Yandex.Disk, Yandex.Maps, Mail.ru Mail, ICQ, Marusya voice assistant, Mail.ru News, OK Live , VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, MirPay (Android only), Gosuslugi, MyOffis Documents, Kaspersky Internet Security (Android only) and Applist.ru.
From July 1, 2021, fines for the sale of smartphones and other devices without mandatory Russian applications will also begin to apply in Russia – for officials, the fine will be from 30 thousand to 50 thousand rubles, for legal entities – from 50 thousand to 200 thousand rubles.
